The verification organization Teyit continues its support against communication and access to accurate information problems in earthquake zones. Teyit, which has distributed three vital information guides that it has prepared with the cooperation of the Needs Map and the Disaster Platform and with the contribution of experts to the citizens affected by the earthquake since the first week of the earthquake, aims to deliver three more guides to the earthquake regions by April 17.

TURKEY - While the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş and Hatay last month caused damage that is difficult to compensate for, the need of the citizens affected by the earthquake to obtain accurate information from reliable sources is increasing day by day. So much so that there is very limited or no internet access in the region, as well as the imposition of access barriers on various platforms, making it even more difficult to access correct information. Verification organization Teyit works to prevent the problem of accessing accurate information in earthquake zones. Since the first week of the earthquake, the organization has been distributing three guides, which contain practical information prepared with the cooperation of the Needs Map and the Disaster Platform, and with the contribution of experts, to the citizens in the region. Teyit aims to deliver three more guides to earthquake zones by April 17.

In the “Guide to vital information needed in earthquake zones,” there is information that those affected by the earthquake can benefit from in their daily lives, such as food safety, heating, toilets, ways to prevent asbestos, and what to do to prevent infection and disease. In addition, there are also misinformation, conspiracy theories, and urban legends that can be encountered in times of crisis, such as earthquakes. Digital versions of the guides are also available on their digital platforms.

“Earthquake victims found themselves in the middle of uncertainty”

In his statement on the subject, Teyit pointed out that disseminating correct information is of critical importance in combating false and incomplete information in times of crisis, such as disasters, and stated that they had detected nearly 150 false pieces of information regarding the earthquake disaster so far. In this context, he prepared informative banners and posters about widespread misinformation and hung them at the aid and support centers in the earthquake area.

Confirmation Editor Beşire Korkmaz, who took part in the preparation of the guide, said, “We are going through a period where it is vital to inform people correctly. It is important to provide uninterrupted access to information, especially in order to meet the most urgent needs. In the areas affected by the earthquake, people suddenly found themselves in the middle of uncertainty. He needed accurate information that directly impacted their lives. At this point, we are striving to deliver the brochures we have created from the correct and necessary information needed by the earthquake victims to the right places in a timely manner.

Kardelen Işık, Teyit Education Officer, who contributed to the information brochure, said, “We have been working to facilitate access to correct information and to prevent false information for everyone affected by the disaster since the first day. We create our brochures by taking into account the needs of people in the earthquake zone whose conditions are constantly changing. We are trying to produce rights-based practical information, content, and tools that take care of children for all institutions, organizations, professionals, and volunteers.”
