ISTANBUL (TR) - The third of the Media, Culture, Community Meetings organized by “Anne ben gaazeteci miyim?” platform, took place on Saturday at the Venue Adate Association with the participation of communication academician, Assoc. Dr. Aybike Serttaş and journalist announcer Fulya Soybaş Işık. "Drama wind in women's murder news: Where is the public function of the media?" Journalist Ali Demirtaş was the moderator of the meeting, which was shaped by the question. Fulya Soybaş Işık emphasized that in the Turkish media, the beauty of the woman killed was a perception that the beauty of the murdered woman increased the news value, while Assoc. Dr. Aybike Serttaş stated that the audience or the reader should react to the violations in the news in question, and these responses can improve the media sector.

WE SEE A LANGUAGE FOCUSED ON WOMEN'S NOT PERPETRATOR

Assoc. Dr. Aybike Serttaş expressed her thoughts on the news of violence against women and violence against women and how this news were examined in the academy: “I think there are problems in terms of technical, content and discourse in the language used in women's murder or violence news. We analyze the news technically first because even with the technique, you actually determine your side or your opinion. Namely, we look at points such as camera angle, shooting scale and angle, distance or proximity of the image. Then we look at the number or few of the cuts used in editing, the speed and slowness of the camera movement. Because I argue that: The camera looks like an extremely neutral and cold object, but it also makes sense. So what we call technical is not just something used to transfer the image. You can also convey various emotions to the audience with the technique. Therefore, we look at the use of a visual in the transfer of news, how those visuals are prepared and edited. The example I use most in my lessons is the clearly published image of Fatih Altaylı, who was stabbed from the back and stabbed in the back years ago. When he received a reaction, Altay defended this news as follows: “Even if it was my own mother, I would have given this image in this way. Because I wanted to draw attention.” Most problems with us actually originate from this point of view. Because if you focus on the victim instead of the perpetrator in this news, you will intimidate people in similar situations. For example, you say that ‘your partner may be slapping you, but look, there are those who are stabbed in the back. So actually your situation is not that bad '. Or, "If you oppose violence, you can come to this situation." Showing the victim in that way is contrary to his personality rights and can create trauma in his children. Because now everything is archived in the digital age and there is an endless archive. It is also a situation that can negatively motivate women in similar situations. In this kind of news, we see an approach that focuses on the victim, not the most perpetrator. Apart from all this, the language and content used are also very important. For example, in some news, we read or listen to autopsy reports. I do not think these are any benefits other than personalizing the news, and further dramatizing it.”

WE CANNOT MAKE QUALIFIED NEWS FROM RATING CONCERNS

Fulya Soybaş Işık said: “First, let's decide on this. News; for news or for ratings? News in our mainstream media is for ratings only. Unfortunately, you use a masculine language where you have anxiety for rating, and you direct it to the victims of news texts. You are fed by his personal story. The more you dramatize, the more viewers you attract. If it is made for TV, the more shouting, noise and crying with the camera angles, the more viewers are attracted to the screen. For this reason, we cannot make a qualified news that we live in a geography where the news is not only communicated due to the quality of being news, and because the rating is very important, in a real female composition, the women's perspective is internalized and developed. As long as there is a rating anxiety and patronage system and that boss is also waiting for a rating from you, I do not know if there will be any improvement in this regard. But of course it would be pointless to draw a completely negative picture. As long as there are conscious journalists and people trying to raise their environment, there will be improvements. For example, there is a statutory law in Turkey, Istanbul Convention and 6284. And we took it off. Turkey was the first signatory country. I am not saying by the government, but I have the belief that as long as we have a capacity to push lawmakers to go to good places. Is it enough? No.”

STORYTIME DRIVES THE EVENT FROM THE SOCIAL DIMENSION

Noting that the issue of awareness is very important in the production of the news in question, Serttaş said: “Am I aware of what I wrote, the news that I did is sexist, or am I aware of the hate speech in this news? For example, in the news headlines, we see the following: erken While the young alcoholic girl was returning home, the fetus woman burned 2 men at once. In the series, the male character says “I love you very much” and ties the female character in his arms and closes it into the room, and we call it love. When we say "this discourse is sexist", when we say "there is a problem in this discourse" and we warn people, we see that people are not aware of this. They do it because they are not aware of it, and therefore it is very important to voice them. For example, as we got to know Özgecan Aslan and learned his story, we became even more sad. Because the situation is narrated and personalized. Thus, we experienced emotional arousal and started to think personally rather than thinking about the social dimension of the event. Therefore, it attracts more attention when it comes to a beautiful woman. Because the news is more suitable to narrate and dramatize. This is because TV is a commercial enterprise. ”

NEWS CAN BE DISCUSSED VERY SERIOUSLY

In the meeting, where the issue of who has a say in the news production process was also discussed, Işık said: “During the news meetings, we will talk about how we will see the news and how it should be structured. A reporter does not have the luxury of saying, "This is my opinion, I do this or not." This is something that happens with some experience and time. At the age of 20, I could not say "I do not do this news", but now I can say "I am not doing it." The chances of being accepted are very high when you tell the reasons why I do not want to do, bring a different perspective and put them in front of you. But I don't know if anyone else can do that. From current examples; As in the murder of Emine Bulut, whose throat was cut in front of her 11-year-old daughter, there were serious discussions about whether the image should be given or not. In general, if you have a news manager who comes from the police court reporter and sees them as an ordinary incident, he would like to give it. They think it will be much more remarkable and stimulating. Because they look different because they internalize it so much. But reporters who are dealing with the issue of women, education, and health can often provide reasons such as this should not be the case, there may be different returns, children at that time on the screen, people's psychology may be negatively affected, or murder may lead other people. There can be very serious discussions about this in meetings. It is determined how the news will be published in these discussions.”

I WORKED WITH MANAGERS THAT SAY 'ASK QUESTIONS TO BEAUTIFUL WOMEN' IN THE STREET INTERVIEWS

Stating that perception of beauty is the subject of news production could have brought a terrible place to what extent exemplified as follows, Işık said “There is a real street interview he would taste it and every reporter in Turkey. When you instantly ask people you do not know what they think about the news topic, their answers add color to the news. A manager of me said, mi Are there no beautiful women in the street, brother? Where are the men who are stupid, you went and interviewed him.” Perception, unfortunately. When this is the perception in media professionals, consider the state of perception that follows you. On the other hand, it is actually reaching a conclusion due to the news in many cases. Unfortunately, when you completely cut the news, you lose the judgment. But we need to work on how to make and develop the news. "Media is in a very bad situation at the moment, nothing is done" should not be passed.”

BEAUTY OF THE KILLED WOMEN INCREASES NEWS VALUE

Işık continued as follows: “As an internal criticism, there is also the question of how beautiful the woman who was killed is. Is there news if the woman killed is not beautiful? Would it be news if Özgecan Aslan had not been so beautiful and charming? Very painful, but the perception of journalism in Turkey this. But of course, as I said, there are still people who are trying to correct and improve something and try to do their job properly.”
